History of Monks Lane, Mount Hunter NSW

Monks Lane is where we grew up - a quaint country road between the villages of Mount Hunter and Cobbitty in South-West Sydney, NSW Australia. Monks Lane runs through Brownlow Hill, a colonial farming estate established in the early 1800’s.

Brownlow Hill House

Brownlow Hill House was built by Alexander Macleay in 1827, before being leased and eventually purchased by the Downes family in 1875. Six generations on, the property is still in the Downes family to this day.

Monks Cottage

John Leonard Monk, was lessee and tenant farmer of 110 acres on Brownlow Hill from 1881. Both Monk’s Cottage and Monks Lane are named after the family.

Monks Lane

In 1887 the southern end of Brownlow Hill was subdivided into 18 lots, accessed via Monks Lane.
